More whooping cough cases in Evanston outbreak, city health department says

Five additional cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in Evanston, bringing the total in the current outbreak to 10, a city health official said Wednesday. Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection involving the respiratory tract that causes prolonged coughing illness, according to Dr. Amanda Cohn, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is formally known as pertussis.

In the midst of neighborhood gang violence, Luther Brown said he's contributing something healthy and positive to his West Side community. He planted multiple vegetables yesterday at a new winter greenhouse he recently helped build at Garfield Park Conservatory. Brown, 28, is a graduate of the Windy City Harvest urban agriculture pilot program. The certificate program is funded by the Chicago Botanic Garden and accredited through Chicago City Colleges.
